Author: Evgeny Vuchetich (1908-1974). The name of the sculpture: “Let’s beat swords into plowshares.” Installed in the UN building in New York – a UN gift from the USSR in 1957. The copy is located next to the branch of the State Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val in Moscow. Grand Prix at the Brussels Exhibition. The sitter was a famous wrestler, Olympic champion Boris Gurevich.
They beat their swords into plowshares — a popular expression from the Bible. The expression refers to the prophecy (vision) that the time will come when the nations “will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into sickles: the people will not raise a sword against the people, and they will no longer learn to fight” (Isa. 2: 4, Micah 4 : 3). Plow is the old name of the plow, a tool for cultivating the soil for sowing. “Forge swords into plowshares” is a slogan calling for the destruction of weapons and the creation of tools for a peaceful life out of them. This is a call to stop wars and start building.
