About the book: The only illustrated pre-revolutionary edition of the works of Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828–1910), in a luxurious, publisher’s, illustrated, calico binding with gold embossing on the front cover and spine, trimmings tinted with ornament, endpapers illustrated with ornament. This edition was the first edition of the works of L.N. Tolstoy, published before 1917. As conceived by the publisher, the publication of the collected works of the great Russian writer was to be the most exquisitely designed of those that had been published until then. It is considered the best of the illustrated editions of L.N. Tolstoy

About the Artist: Alexander Petrovich Apsit (1880-1944) was a Russian Latvian artist. In 1898-1899 he studied at the studio of L. E. Dmitriev-Kavkazsky in St. Petersburg. For magazines and Moscow publishers A.F.Marks, A.D.Stupin, I.D.Sytin he illustrated works by L.N.Tolstoy, A.P.Chekhov, N.S.Leskov, A.M.Gorky.
