He is known for renouncing worldly power to become a strict ascetic monk, Basil, at a monastery he built, becoming a model of piety. Oleg is the patron saint of rulers and defenders of the faith. His devotion to Christianity and his role in introducing the faith to Kievan Rus make him an important saint in Orthodox tradition. Many Orthodox Christians, particularly in Russia and Ukraine, pray to him for protection and guidance during times of political or spiritual uncertainty.
