Mikhail Vrubel is an outstanding Russian painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author of the canvases `Old Knorre for knitting`, `Model in a Renaissance setting`, `Self-portrait`, `Angel with a censer and a candle`, `Hamlet and Ophelia`, `Girl against the backdrop of a Persian carpet`. One of the main images created by Vrubel is the image of a demon, to which the artist returned in different periods of his work. The most famous are the canvases `Seated Demon` (1890) and `Defeated Demon` (1902). In 1905 Vrubel was awarded the title of Academician of Painting.
