Reference Information.
– The Avro Lancaster is a British Second World War heavy bomber. It was designed and manufactured by Avro as a contemporary of the Handley Page Halifax, both bombers having been developed to the same specification, as well as the Short Stirling, all three aircraft being four-engined heavy bombers adopted by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the same era.
– Lancaster Mark I “G for George” (W4783 AR-G) was a key player in the RAF’s strategic bombing campaign during WWII, built by Metropolitan Vickers Ltd in 1940 and equipped with Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engines. It was later fitted with Merlin 22 engines for service with the RAAF’s No. 460 Squadron.
– “G for George” completed around 90 missions, including pivotal raids over Europe with crews like Flt Sgt J A Saint-Smith and Pilot Officer H Carter. Its final wartime mission was a raid on Cologne, Germany, in April 1944, marking its retirement as one of the most operationally active RAF aircraft.
– After the war, the aircraft was overhauled for museum display and flown to Australia. It toured for the Third Victory Loan and was preserved at the Australian War Memorial, where it has been a prominent exhibit since 1955, featured in the “Striking by night” display, commemorating its role in the Berlin bombings of December 1943.
