History of Chess in the USSR 1949-1961:

1. “Chess for 1947-1949”. 1951 year. 460 pages. – During the period under review, the dream of Soviet chess players came true – in 1948, the Soviet chess school won a significant and natural victory, grandmaster M. M. Botvinnik, a graduate of the Lenin-Stalin party, became the world champion. During this time, the most advanced chess school in the world, created in the conditions of socialist culture, has consolidated its leading position and made a huge contribution to the development of chess art throughout the world. The year 1947 brought victory to Soviet chess players in a match with representatives of the English chess school.

2. “Chess for 1950”. 1952 year. 340 pages. – The year 1950 began with a brilliant victory for the Soviet chess players, who won the first four places in the tournament of the strongest chess players in the world. L. Rudenko became the world champion. In the Budapest match-tournament of contenders for a meeting with world champion M. Botvinnik. The first section of the collection – competitions, games and endings – includes detailed descriptions of both all-Union and international competitions.

3. “Chess for 1951-1952”. 1953 year. 241 pages. – This collection tells about chess life in the USSR and abroad in 1951-1952. In 1951, the first match for the title of world champion took place between two Soviet grandmasters. 1952 brought Soviet chess players victories in the tenth International Olympiad, the Stockholm Interzonal and the Moscow International Women’s Tournaments.

4. “Chess for 1953”. 1954 year. 320 pages. – The biggest international competition this year was the Candidates Tournament in Switzerland, where 15 grandmasters, including nine Soviet ones, competed for the right to face world champion Mikhail Botvinnik in single combat. As a result of a tense two-month struggle, grandmaster Vasily Smyslov won this honorable right.

5. “Chess for 1954”. 1955 year. 366 pages. – In the book: materials about competitions for the title of world champions (Botvinnik-Smyslov match, XI Olympiad, etc.), for the championship of the Soviet Union (XXI USSR championship, country team championship, XIV USSR championship among women, etc.), etc. tournaments and matches in the USSR and abroad. 92 games have been commented. In the section “History. Analysis” published articles by P. Romanovsky “Italian Chess School”, I. Romanov “From Chigorin’s creative heritage”, A. Suetin “About topical opening problems”, G. Levenfish “On the theory of rook endings”. The “Appendices” contains an article by N. Sakharov “Soviet chess literature”

6. “Chess for 1955”. 1956 year. 287 pages. – The presented collection contains articles about the exciting competitions of the strongest, as well as about all international meetings in which Soviet chess players competed in 1955. The section “History and Analysis” tells about the international relations of the national chess school. The article “Queen Sacrifice” has collected an extensive collection of combinations with queen sacrifice. In the article “New Opening Problems” everything new that came up in the opening stage of the games played in 1955.

7. “Chess for 1956”. 1958 year. 336 pages. – There were many great chess events in 1956. The XII Chess Olympiad was held in Moscow, in which teams from 34 countries of Europe, America, and Asia participated. The international tournament in memory of A. Alekhine, held in Moscow, aroused great interest. In the book, the reader will find articles and reviews on the USSR championship, the match-tournament for the world championship among women, the tournament of candidates for the match with the world champion in Amsterdam, the XII Olympiad in Moscow and other competitions.

8. “Chess for 1958-59”. 1960 year. 504 pages. – Many significant and exciting events in chess took place during 1958-1959 in the Soviet Union and around the world. There are three matches for the world championship, and a chess Olympiad, and tournaments for the title of champions of the USSR, and a number of other first-class Soviet and foreign competitions. All this variety of chess life is presented in the collection in six sections: I – Competitions for the world championship; II – Competitions for the championship of the USSR; III – Competitions in the republics and cities of the Soviet Union; IV – Chess competitions of the II Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR; V – Competitions abroad (with subsection “Soviet chess players abroad”); VI – Bibliography (Review by N. Sakharov “Soviet chess literature in 1958-1959”). The rematches for the world championship of O. Rubtsova – E. Bykova and V. Smyslov – M. Botvinnik, the interzonal tournament in Portoroz, the XIII Olympiad in Munich, the VI student world championship in Budapest, the XXV and XVI USSR championships and other tournaments and matches are covered .

9. “Chess Yearbook 1960”. 1962 year. 498 pages. – The largest articles are devoted to the world championship match between M. Botvinnik and M. Tal, the XIV Olympiad in Leipzig, the VII World Team Championship in Leningrad, the XVII USSR Championship, the XX Anniversary Women’s Championship of the USSR, the team championship of the Soviet Union. 145 games and a significant number of endings have been commented.

10.  “Chess Yearbook 1961”. 1963 year. 368 pages. – The 1961 goal was exceptionally full of chess competitions, both in our country and abroad. Soviet chess players took part in all the events held by FIDE. These include the rematch for the world championship between M. Tal and M. Botvinnik, the VIII world team championship among students, the youth world championship, the candidates’ tournament, the II European team championship. In addition to official competitions, Soviet chess players met in various team matches and tournaments with chess players from many countries of the world. This entire group of competitions, regardless of where they are held – in the USSR or abroad – is singled out in the yearbook as an independent section – “International Meetings of Soviet Chess Players”.
