The original icon has been in the Pochayiv Lavra (monastery), in Ternopil oblast, Ukraine, since 1597.
The Mother of God is depicted from the waist up, which is typical for many of her images.
In one hand she has the infant Jesus the Savior, in the other hand she holds a white handkerchief, which covers the body of her son. With his right hand, Jesus makes a characteristic gesture of blessing.
