The icon of the “Tenderness”(Umilenie) of Virgin Mary is a sacred image that holds great significance for the Orthodox Christian faith.
Seraphim of Sarov, a revered saint, prayed and passed away before this icon. He called her “Joy of all joys”.
St Seraphim was a monk in the Sarov Monastery, and later was made the spiritual father and priest serving a small convent in the nearby village of Diveyevo. It is the icon’s connection with the both Seraphim and the Diveyevo convent which gives the Icon its third name – after “Umilenie” and “Joy of Joys” – the “Seraphimo-Diveyevskaya”. This latter title helps to distinguish between St Seraphim’s icon, and other icons of the Mother of God called “tenderness” (in Greek Eleousa), which are quite different.
The icon is rare within Orthodoxy in that it shows the Mother of God without the infant Christ.
The reason for this is because it is a depiction of Mary at the moment of the Annunciation.
