Vladimir I Sviatoslavich was Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Kiev and the first Russian ruler to embrace Christianity. Vladimir urged all his subjects to become Christians, established churches and monasteries, he established schools, introduced ecclesiastical courts, and became known for his mildness and for his zeal in spreading the Christian faith. The Eastern Orthodox Church canonised him as Saint Vladimir.
